Values That Matter. A Vision That Works.
Montgomery, Ala – Alabama House Democrats released a diverse agenda surrounding issues that affect every Alabamian: Education, Health Care, Criminal Justice Reform, Revenue Generation, and Voting Access.
“This agenda is definitely of the people,” said House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels. “This year we decided to do things a little differently. We held listening sessions in 10 areas throughout the state.”
The culmination is an agenda based on comments and concerns from real constituents.
“We heard from Main Street,” said Rep. Daniels. “In rural areas healthcare was the top concern, followed by education; while in urban areas, criminal justice reform was the number one issue, with education number two.”
House Democrats understand that good public schools will make Alabama more appealing as a home for families and businesses.
House Democrats recognize that expanding Medicaid, providing access to affordable health care and ensuring that no more hospitals close is vital to reducing our infant mortality rates and prolonging the lives of all of our citizens.
“We’ve put together a representative agenda that focuses on the core issues of working Alabama families and their everyday problems,” said Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Christopher England.
House Democrats know that Alabama’s overcrowded prisons create safety issues for our corrections officers and prisoners alike; and that finding alternatives to long-term incarceration is critical to effective prison reform, especially when it comes to non-violent offenders.
House Democrats see the value of introducing new revenue streams that add money to the state coffers, such as a state lottery and taxes generated from legalized medical marijuana to ensure that Alabama’s General Fund has enough resources for state programs.
The agenda, developed and agreed upon by the members of the House Democratic Caucus, focuses on Values That Matter. A Vision That Works:
- Supporting Our Public Schools
- Prioritizing Early Childhood Education
- Focusing on College and Career Readiness
- Investing in Our Educators
- Ensuring Access to Affordable Health Care
- Controlling Costs
- Fighting the Epidemic of Addiction
- Supporting Mental Health
- Rebuilding Our Workforce
- Fighting for Working Families
- Promoting Rural Vitality
- Increasing Revenue
- Focusing on Reducing Recidivism
- Reforming Sentencing and Transforming Lives
- Uplifting All Alabama Voices
Over the coming weeks House Democratic Members will introduce legislation in support of these main tenants. Members will also continue holding town hall meetings across the state to discuss this agenda and other issues of importance to Alabamians.
“This agenda represents something we, as Democrats believe in and that we believe serves all Alabamians and will lead us to a better future for our state.” said Daniels.
